What is furoshiki?
Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth often used to wrap and or transport goods. It has been used by Japanese people for over 1,000 years.
The size is typically around 17.5 x 17.5 to 21 x 21 inches and are often made of silk or cotton.
Furoshiki designs
I wanted to create conversational narratives centered around small moments in life, such as serendipitous encounters and discoveries, and routine to moments of joy.
I was first inspired by my little sister, who as a child, who would stop along the footpath to observe insects or try to befriend my uncle's cat. This led me to think about everyday moments I love throughout life, like dancing or simply putting on an outfit that makes you feel good.
Pattern application and printed fabrics
Motif and pattern development
After creating individual motifs I combined them to create a croquis, then using croquis to create a series of patterns. I experimented with spacing, background colors, line weight, and orientation. With furoshiki you have to consider any corner can be used for wrapping and prints are often asymmetrical, so that guided me to having each corner be unique as opposed to repeated.
